"I had been with State Farm for nearly 11 years across multiple states. Everything seemed fine when I first moved to Texas and used this office, but their service and competence have drastically declined over the last year or two.

Last-minute rate changes: The week before closing on my house, they informed me they hadn't properly checked my details and could not honor the quote we had already agreed on. Instead, I was forced into a higher rate through one of their subsidiaries.

Illogical policy drops: My wife had two fender benders in her car within a year, so State Farm decided to drop the insurance on my car. I'm not necessarily upset about their formula for dropping people—though you'd think 11 years of loyalty would buy a bit of grace—but absolutely no one in their office could explain why my vehicle was dropped instead of my wife's.

Incompetent billing and lapsed coverage: I recently got a notice from their subsidiary (Dover) that my home insurance hadn't been paid and I was about to be dropped. The local office was completely unable to coordinate with Dover to let me pay electronically. It turns out they filed all the bank access forms incorrectly. I mailed a check to stop the cancellation, asked them to sort the issue out, and resubmitted the required forms. They never filed them. Because of their failure to process basic paperwork, my homeowner's insurance lapsed, and my mortgage company hit me with a penalty and they have not responding to compensating me for the penalty nor providing a proof of coverage that I should have had

I've moved all my policies away from State Farm. Your mileage may vary with another agent, but since corporate seems to call all the shots anyway, paying higher premiums for a local agent who can't handle simple paperwork just isn't worth it.

UPDATE just for clarity on Jason's comments. I'm not upset that they were unable to insure due to crazy restrictions around Houston. I'm aware of those. I'm upset that on

3/20 I was told you could no longer honor that quote because your agent had failed to properly check it out. You provided a quote with a 56% increase to replace it 6 days before I closed on my house.
